The climate, tl their beat fishing ai “Let's get the name Bird Cage Walk back,” he said to me. “With the name I’ve got I can't very well fight for Bird Cage Walk — you know, Par­rott’s after a bird cage ~ that’s where he should be —that sort of joking. How about you having a try?” Bird Cage Walk was once the 'name ot that part ol today's Government Street running south from Belleville to Michigan. It was called Bird Cage Walk because of the original legislative buildings, which were so designed that they looked for all the world like bird cages. Moat citizens of the time thought them hideous, and they were heartily ridiculed and sneered upon, often th,e butt of ribald jokes. If only one of those Bird Cages was still in existence what a priceless historic treasure we’d have. The last at the bird cages burned down in 1957. It stood where the south court and fountain of the legislative buildings are today.
